The Air Temples are know to be thousands of years old where the Air Nomads reside. The four Air Temples, one at each corner of the globe, are hidden away atop mountain ranges in the northern Earth Kingdom and on three remote islands or archipelagos. Much like The Avatar, The Air Nomads have separated themselves from the world and live in a secluded scenario where life for an Air Bender is very different from other nations.
Their religious views are very unique to most other people and their beliefs revolve around cosmic energy and past lives. Because of their beliefs, each temple houses only male or female. In fact, a male nomad may not meet a female nomad their entire life and vise versa. While differing ways they may possess, the Air Nomads have discovered true enlightenment and are the only people who are really at peace with all things.

Southern Air Temple The Southern Air Temple, sometimes called the Jongmu Temple, is one of the four temples, located near the south pole, and houses male Air Benders exclusively.
Northern Air Temple The Northern Air Temple is another temple exclusively housing male Air Benders. It is located in the upper reaches of the northern Earth Kingdom, on a snowy mountain. The temple is notable for the population of Earth Kingdom residence that are allowed to visit this incredible land.
Eastern Air Temple The Eastern Air Temple is one of the two temples exclusively housing female Air Benders, the other being the Western Air Temple.
The Western Air Temple The Western Air Temple is the counterpart to the Eastern Air Temple, housing exclusively female Air Benders. It is located in the mountains north of the Fire Nation, resembling an upside-down pagoda. The temple is notable in that, unlike the other three temples, it is situated underneath the edge of a cliff, as opposed to a mountaintop. The spires seem as though they were built upside-down, and because of that, the temple is hidden to the passerby.
